Argument Materials for TOEFL Speaking & Writing: Topic 02 – Studying Abroad

WritingUpdated 1 min read

About the test format

This topic comes from the independent opinion tasks used in TOEFL Speaking and Writing before the 2023 and 2026 redesigns. Those tasks no longer exist, but the arguments and phrases still work for Write for an Academic Discussion and for any spoken answer where you give an opinion with reasons.

These model paragraphs give three reasons why students choose to study abroad. The bolded phrases are reusable patterns for naming a benefit and then supporting it with detail, in a written response or a spoken one.

Question/Topic

Why do so many students choose to study at a school or university in another country? Explain your answer with specific reasons and details.

Sample Argument Materials

❶ Experience

Life in a foreign country is full of exciting and challenging opportunities. Popular destinations include Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, and Italy. Studying abroad is a way to meet new people, experience new places, and break away from the daily routine of college life.

❷ Opportunities

Studying abroad offers a wide variety of opportunities to each individual. Students don't only take courses; they also get the chance to travel around the country and explore the big cities it has to offer. Some students even have experiences abroad that change the direction of their lives.

❸ Education

Studying abroad is a chance to get a high-quality education and learn about fields that may be less developed at home. That can give graduates an advantage in the job market. Students also improve their language and communication skills every day, simply by living in another language. Above all, studying abroad enriches their life experience and broadens their view of the world.

Why these phrases work

Each paragraph names one clear benefit (experience, opportunities, education) and then backs it up with a specific detail. Use the same pattern when you support an opinion in a short written or spoken response.
